Dice Holdings acquires Geeknet’s online media business for $20M

Dice Holdings, a provider of specialised career websites has acquired Geeknet’s online media business, including Slashdot and SourceForge. Dice Holdings acquired the business for $20 million in cash.  In 2011, the online media properties generated $20 million in Revenues.

The sites include:

  • Slashdot, a user-generated news, analysis, peer question and professional insight community.  Tech professionals moderate the site which averages more than 5,300 comments daily and 3.7 million unique visitors each month.
  • SourceForge, a destination for technology professionals and enthusiasts to develop, download, review and publish open source software, much of which they use in their own organizations.  Approximately 80 percent of its roughly 40 million monthly unique visitors are outside the U.S.
  • Freecode, one of the largest indexes of Linux, Unix and cross-platform software, as well as mobile applications generates nearly 500,000 unique visitors each month.

Shutterfly acquires Penguin Digital

Online photo services company Shutterfly has acquired Penguin Digital, a mobile application developer that provides consumers with a way to create, share and purchase photo merchandise directly from their mobile devices.

Penguin Digital launched an iPhone app in January 2012 called Mobile Photo Factory or MoPho for short (www.mophoapp.com), which allows anyone to easily create physical prints and photo based merchandise such as iPhone & iPad cases, mugs, key chains, apparel, canvas prints and more. The MoPho application will be rebranded and updated over the next few months and will add to Shutterfly’s mobile offerings, which include the popular Shutterfly iPhone and iPad apps and the soon to be released Treat birthday card app. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Penguin Digital founders Reuven Moskowitz and Josh Friedman, along with the rest of the Penguin Digital team, will be establishing Shutterfly’s new technology centre in New York City.

Dropbox acquires TapEngage

Dropbox has acquired TapEngage, a company that enables advertisers and publishers to work together to create advertising that takes advantage of the power of tablets. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition was announced by founders Matt Holden and Sean Lynch on the TapEngage blog.

TiVo to acquire TRA

TiVo is to acquire TRA, a media marketing and analytics software company whose products help advertisers, agencies and television networks improve advertising targeting, accountability and return on media investment. TRA matches television exposures from 1.5 million TV homes with specific purchase transactions. The new unit will be known as TiVo Research and Analytics.

Tom Rogers, CEO and President of TiVo said, “TV has long been the best medium for advertisers to influence what consumers buy. TRA has proven its platform can determine the effectiveness of TV advertising by connecting the exposure of ads to actual purchases, helping advertisers identify the right audience and get the most out of their ad dollars. TRA has driven a substantial client list of advertisers, agencies and networks with this proposition. With this new level of unique audience insights and analytics, TiVo will be able to provide insights nobody else has in an industry increasingly seeking alternative ways to measure audience behavior accurately while increasing efficiencies in media spending.”

TRA has more than 45 brand clients and 27 network clients including CBS, A&E Television Networks, ION Media, Procter & Gamble, Oscar Mayer and Starcom MediaVest Group, among others.

TiVo will pay approximately $20 million for TRA. TiVo expects the transaction to close this month. TRA’s revenue is on track to increase significantly in 2012.

Facebook has acquired Face.com for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition was announced on the Face.com blog.

Mood Media Corporation acquires BIS for €22.5M

Mood Media Corporation has acquired BIS Group, a provider of commercial audio-visual installation in the Benelux region, for a consideration of €22.5 million in cash. Mood Media is an in-store media specialist that helps its clients communicate with consumers with a view to driving incremental sales at the point-of-purchase.

In the year ended December 31, 2011, BIS recorded revenue of €46.1 M and Profit Before Tax of €2.6 M.

Ziff Davis Acquires ComputerShopper.com

Technology media company Ziff Davis has acquired ComputerShopper.com, a destination for expert, labs-based reviews and comparison shopping of technology products.

Computer Shopper has long been an authoritative voice in the hardware and software industries, initially as a print publication and today as a website attracting over 1.5 million unique visitors per month.

The fifth acquisition for Ziff Davis since the beginning of 2011, ComputerShopper.com gives the fast growing digital media company yet another influential property that plays a critical role in guiding technology buyers in their purchase decisions.

Founded in 1979, Computer Shopper was a Ziff Davis property from 1993-2001 when it was sold to CNET. SX2 Media Labs, which purchased Computer Shopper from CNET in 2006, is now selling it back to Ziff Davis.
